Burt Wolf, award-winning and highly-respected journalist, has tested and approves this product. Following are his comments.

Wooden knife blocks can be bigger (or smaller) than this 19-slot block, but its features illustrate what to look for when investing in a free-standing unit. Made of sturdy hardwood to be durable and stain-resistant, it has a full, flat base for secure placement and well-distanced slots for easy removal. Holds 9 knives, sharpening steel, kitchen shears and 8 steak knives.

Due to a manufacturer's modification, the vertical slots to hold steak knives have been turned horizontally. This allows all styles of Henckels Cutlery handles to fit.

I am satisfied but by no means elated with the product. The wood did not seem to me to be the quality I anticipated. Time will tell how durable it is.

I purchased this item as a gift for one of my daughters. She absolutely loves it! One of the things she really likes about it is that it is still conpact in size even though the knifes lay horizontally instead of vertically.

Reasonably priced, but low quality wood which had a hairline crack down the back. It is serviceable, and the best I found for the money.

I was looking to upgrade to a block to accommodate both my kitchen knives and steak knives. This one has plenty of room for all. Best of all it was about 50% off!

Cooking Tip From the Food Network Kitchens

Take good care of your knives and they'll take care of you in return. Always hand wash them, then dry and put away immediately. Running them through the dishwasher will make the blades rusty.
