Although she started out her career working on nuclear energy policy in the White House, Ina Garten has become one of the country's most recognizable names when it comes to food. In 1978 she made the decision to change careers and bought a small food store in the Hamptons area of New York's Long Island. Called the Barefoot Contessa after the classic Humphrey Bogart/Ava Gardner movie, the shop became hugely successful under Ina's care, with customers cramming the store in order to get a taste of her simple yet delicious preparations. In 2001 she made the decision to sell the store to her employees, and to bring her uncommon warmth and knack for entertaining to Food Network viewers on the show Barefoot Contessa. In addition to her TV work, Ina is also the author of five cookbooks.
