If you do a little research beforehand and read the earlier reviews, you will have excellent results your first try. I smoked 2 racks of ribs for almost 6 hours using hickory CHUNKS (don't use chips) and they were wonderful!!
My only con is that the cooking directions are very vague. I had to go online to the Brinkman web site to get specifics.
we are very happy with our Brinkmann smoker. Since we've never used one before, I don't have anything to compare it to but the overall features of the smoker are great.

Soak your chips in water for at least half an hour so they don't catch fire. Different woods work well for different foods; hickory is a great place to start.
