Like you, I wanted to find a good toaster but based on reviews I was having a hard time picking one. So I bought 3 to try at home. The Chef Pepin 4-Slice Toaster, the Dualit Lite 4-Slice Commercial Toaster and the Kitchen Aid Pro Line 4 Slice Toaster - KPTT890. I chose these three based on price, looks, features and reviews. I ended up keeping the Kitchen Aid – partly because shipping was going to be so expensive to return it.

Pros and Cons. In General - I found that I liked the 4 smaller slots (Kitchen Aid/Chef Pepin) vs. the 2 longer ones (Dualit). It allows you to toast two different types of bread and/or desired level of toasting at the same time but you lose out on the ability to toast longer bread. Also, all these toasters have a knob for toasting level but in every case only 35% of the range will be used – it seems like there should be better technology out there. Prior to buying I wondered why the "professional" level of toaster, that you pay more for, didn't have the Bagel feature - I determined that was because it really didn't make much of a difference my wife and I both ended up liking the bagels done without the feature used.

Chef Pepin 4-Slice Toaster- I liked the looks, it had even toasting, largest useable range on the toasting level, nice eject button, it didn’t seem as well made as the Kitchen Aid but at ¼ the price. Only real downside was that the lift didn’t go as far as the others, a fork helped in getting out the English muffins.

Dualit Lite 4-Slice Commercial Toaster - I liked the shape and size the best because it was thinner it was tucked away better, it had even toasting, had automatic pop-up when done with a nice extra lift feature, it was the only one with a bagel button but I like bagels done without it activated better. Downsides were the auto-pop-up was too aggressive - shooting bread out onto the counter, it had a small toasting range, didn’t have the ability to toast at 2 different levels simultaneously.

Kitchen Aid Pro Line 4 Slice Toaster - KPTT890 - liked the looks, had most even toasting, seems well made (3 times as heavy as the others), I ended up liking the fact that it only beeps when done, keeping the toast warm while I finish whatever I am doing until I get to the bread and the tactile feel of raising the bread makes you feel that it was worth the extra cost. The only real downside was the cost and that in couldn’t do the longer bread like the Dualit.

In the end if I was buying one now it would probably be the Chef Pepin, if cost is truly no issue for you then go for the Kitchen Aid.

Perfect Toaster

Would purchase again

The bread comes out toasted perfectly and evenly.
I like the fact that you have to raise the bread after toasting.
Not only does it keep it warm, but prevents the heating coils from shaking like and automatic pop-up toaster would.
This extends the life of the toaster much longer.

I have been searching for a very good toaster. I thought this was it. Unfortunately, when the toast is ready one side is always more done than the other just like my old Cusinart toaster. Why is it so hard to get the toast done evenly?
