The dish is highly resistant to chipping and cracking and can go from freezer to hot oven up to 500 degrees; also microwave, broiler and dishwasher safe.

About Emile Henry… In the Burgundy region of France is the legendary maker of fine French cookware named Emile Henry. There, potters still hand craft each piece from the local Burgundy Clay - one of the purest of clays, and finish each one with a process known as CERADON, which makes them extremely solid and durable. Containing no lead, the clay is one of the best materials for baking and serving.

Interesting color, the best bakeware ever

I love this bake ware because it cooks evenly, never burns on the bottom and cleans up very easily. The black color has more of a matt finish than the other colors, but it doesn't seem to effect the performance.

Bought one for myself and subsequently another for a friend. Baked goods are wonderful in it and the dish cleans up after soaking with little effort and looks brand new afterwards. Highly recommend Emile Henry products if you haven't tried them yet. The price is worth it.

I really like this dish. The 9x9-in. size is very handy--I use it for prep, cooking, and serving. I have larger Emile Henry dishes but I use them mostly for entertaining as they are large enough to be unwieldy for using and washing when I'm cooking everyday meals. I find myself using this dish much more frequently. The color is a rich brown with undertones of purple. It looks aubergine in some lights.
