For making gravies and sauces, this separator helps you save the flavor, straining out greasy fat. To use, pour liquid into the separator. Fat rises to the top, while leaner parts settle to the bottom. The heat-resistant strainer catches unwanted food bits, and the stopper prevents fat from entering the spout when you pour liquid back into your pot to finish cooking. A shield stops fat from spilling over the top of the separator. Measurement markings add convenience, and the non-slip handle provides a comfortable grip. Holds four cups.

Before the Oxo Fat Separator, I had used the ones made of glass. They always felt so fragile I was nervous when using them and storing them. The Oxo Separator is amazing. It is very user friendly. It has a large capacity, is very heat resistant and is easy to see through as you pour. A very minimal amount of fat was left at the bottom. The strainer allowed more liquid to be reserved when pouring off. I purchased the Oxo Separator as a gift for my mother and showed her how to use it over Christmas. I think I will order another for myself and get rid of my glass version.

Not quite sure what to think

I have only had one opportunity to use this so far. It seems that I needed more drippings to separate so that the cup would work properly and this was from a 20# turkey. I tried adding some broth to the contents in the cup to make the fat rise to the level where it wouldn't pour out with the good drippings. This seems to have worked better and I liked the rich broth this made. I have seen smaller versions of this separator and maybe this would resolve the problem. I am not sure that it is worth the considerable investment for someone who rarely roasts large pieces of meat.

Love the product! The spout stopper is very ingeneous and actually works.
I also like the strainer lid that keeps large particles out of the separator.
I highly recommend this product.

I have not used the separator, my only comment is that it is bulky so you need a good place to store it.

Worked Exactly as Advertised

We used it yesterday for the first time. Our old separator finally gave up the ghost after 20 years and this is the replacement. The plug in the spout kept the fat out and the large capacity was needed with the volume of liquid from the pan. Highly recommended!

This fat seperator is perfect it has a strainer to strain the bigger bits out and the stopper so the fat doesn't get in the spout. Holds alot as well. I have a smaller cheaper one and I had the hardest time with it. I definetly would recomend this one size and function it's worth every penny.

like it but...

My new fat separator came in handy for the holidays but I still don't understand the spout plug. It's suppossed to keep fat from going up the spout BUT as soon as you remove the plug some fat rises up there--a mystery I've yet to research. Still, glad it's in my cooking toolbox.

BEST I'VE EVER USED

While planning Thanksgiving dinner for 16, I found this product in an email offer from cooking.com and thiught I'd give it a try. Sure glad I did! It's simple to use, just like the instructions describe, and my gravy was GREAT if I do say so myself! The Friday after Thanksgiving I removed the leftover gravy from the fridge and there was no layer of congealed fat in the container. No more skimming the stock & making a big mess while trying to make gravy or sauces. I love it.

I have been looking for a 4 cup fat separator for some time and was thrilled to find this one. It is so easy to strain the fat and the little pieces of food that you don't want in your broth. Great product!

Rubber plug can be difficult to remove which can cause you to mix the separated contents and spill if nearly full.

Happy

We had a huge turkey for a family dinner, at my nephew's house. The 4 cup separator strainer worked wonderful. No one could believe the amount of fat that came off the turkey. In fact, no one there had ever used a separator strainer; we would cool off the the juice, then spoon off some grease.
We didn't have to cool anything using this product; we used it immediately after the turkey was removed.
The only negative comment I have is: I didn't leave there with my separator strainer. LOL
My nephew asked me what he could do, to get a strainer like that, I replied "a hug".
So, I will be placing another order for a separator strainer real soon, to replace the one I left at my nephew's home.

OXO Fat Separator

This item solves a problem I've had for years. All too often, my sauces and gravies came out greasy. With this item you just pour off the excess fat. Last Thanksgiving, I got rave reviews on my gravey. One guest remarked that he could just eat my gravey with a spoon instead of putting it on spuds or stuffing.

Excellent product. I make stock at least once a week, and this *really* makes it easier, and eliminates almost all the fat at the same time.

I had an expensive glass fat separator that worked alright but was very fragile. Of course I broke it. The Oxo separates better and is far more kitchen friendly. I use it in my restaurant kitchen. Miss Olivia's Table.

Cooking Tip From the Food Network Kitchens

Separators are great to have because they make separating fat easy and less messy; the low-on-the-cup spout helps pour out the drippings and leave the fat behind.
