One day, back in the summer of 1992, I decided I wanted to make a television food show. I wasn't going to let the fact that I was little more than a hobbyist get in the way. The odyssey that followed became the program "Good Eats," which has managed to hold its own on the Food Network for over a decade. (It even won a Peabody Award, which is a pretty big deal.)

Good Eats: The Early Years is an encyclopedic work encompassing the show's first 80 episodes, from "Steak Your Claim" to "Casserole Over." Each show has its very own chapter, complete with remastered recipes, behind-the-scenes photos and lore, stunningly sophomoric illustrations, poetic narrative, and plenty of useful facts cleverly packaged in the form of knowledge concentrates (patent pending). We've even included bonus recipes that we've been selfishly hoarding over the years. Best of all, we've addressed a few nagging anomalies that have been chafing at our collective culinary conscience for all this time. Nothing big, mind you, but it does feel good to set a few things straight.

If you're a "Good Eats" fan, a cook, someone who eats, or just a sentient creature passing through the solar system, you'll want your very own copy of Good Eats: The Early Years. And don't worry, Good Eats: The Middle Ages is in the works as we speak.

May the food be with you.
--Alton Brown

Good Eats - A must have for the everyday cook
by Joanna, GA
October 16, 2009

Here are the recipes in print, to sit and brouse. Its easy to find the details of the recipes while reading the commentary on how/what AB thinks about cooking. Nice to have them in hand rather than fishing around FN trying to find AB's recipes.

Good Reads!
by Cora, NJ
January 27, 2010

Any fan of the show would love this book, and any fan of cooking should have this book. It's filled with insights into both the episodes, and cooking techniques and science. Alton's quirky personality jumps off the pages, and his informative, yet fun instructions are the spoonful of sugar that makes learning the science of cooking go down. A great buy for anyone that wants to learn about cooking, not just reading recipes.

Give me more...
by Polly, CA

I finally got something with Alton in it. It's scientific information plays an important role to fill the gap in my culinary study that I am taking-on this year. I work as a computer system software specialist, but I love to eat. And, I like to test in my kitchen. Some people like just to get the recipes and make wonderful dish. But I like to understand and test and create with food, so, this is a great book for me to accompany one of Alton's DVD series I also ordered. I recommend it as a gift to yourself or to anyone who loves the "good eats".

Mr. Wizard, The Muppets and Julia Childs
by Douglas, IL
February 11, 2010

This fantastic reference volume contains the major contests of six great seasons of Good Eats. EB famous show is fantastic (and so is this book)– As EB said, he intended to blend the Why of Mr. Wizard, the How of Julia Childs and the seasoning of the Muppets to keep it all together in a format that is educational and entertaining. He certainly has done so consistently. This book succeeds in doing the same in printed form. The content is as you would expect from the shows. The format is fantastic; the graphics are great and colorful. The out takes from the programs are fun. It is a great value for almost four hundred pages of great stuff! (Even the dust jacket continues the fun surprises as it folds out into a huge poster)

Finally, we have all of Alton's wit and wisdom in an easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable book. If you like the show you will love this book. If you've never seen the show (shame on you) you will love this book. All of the witty knowledge and humor we have come to expect from the show is now condensed into this cookbook with a little extra on the side. Love it, love Alton, and love his show. Long reign Alton!

IF you haven't committed every Good Eats episode to memory (as Alton says) then this is the book for you. It's the quintessential Alton Brown; a little science, a little food lore, and a good dose of humor. Definitely a good read!
