Good thing my son-in-law was in the house when I tried to mash potatoes. Neither my daughter or myself had the hand strength to operate this. Either we were doing something totally wrong or there was a problem with the ricer. No directions included and it seems simple enough to understand. Back to a plain old potato masher for me.
The quality is fantastic. However, I have only used it twice and it was difficult. I tried to put cooked turnips in it, it wouldn't work as it required too much pressure. Next, I tried putting in cooked potatoes with the skin on, and I could only press one layer at a time as it required muscle power because of the skins, but the end result sure was nice mashed potatoes. My next experiment will be potatoes without the skin to see if that would justify my keeping it due to the expense. Another reviewer mentioned apples for sauce, so I would like to try that, too.
In memory of my mother 'ricing' potatoes when I was very young, I ordered the Ricer. I found that (1) I did not have the strength to make it work and (2) the 'ricing' size was larger than I expected, which was disappointing. I will try it again, however, with peeled potatoes as I believe that may make it easier.
Except for being a little too big for a petite woman to operate, the ricer is well made and meets expectations.
When you review the product information because it is called "jumbo" you assume it is big. To my surprise it holds no more than 2 cups of potatoes at a time. The product works well and you get a excellent result but it is not JUMBO. It takes a lot of time to rice 5lb. of potatoes. I am not happy paying that much for something so small.
