Now in paper. Dedicated viewers of Alton Brown’s acclaimed Food Network show "Good Eats" know of his penchant for using unusual equipment. He has smoked a salmon in a cardboard box, roasted prime rib in a flowerpot, and used a C-clamp as a nutcracker. Brown isn’t interested in novelty, he’s just devoted to using the best—and simplest—tool for the job.

Alton Brown’s Gear For Your Kitchen offers honest, practical advice on what’s needed and what isn’t, what works and what doesn’t. For instance: You only need three knives, but they are a lifetime investment. And don’t bother with that famous countertop grill—it doesn’t get hot enough to properly sear. In his signature science-guy style, Brown begins with advice on kitchen layout and organization, then gets to the lowdown on these cooking elements: Big Things with Plugs; Pots and Pans; Sharp Things; The Tool Box; Small Things with Plugs; Storage and Containment; and Safety and Sanitation.

Gear For Your Kitchen is essential for all of Brown’s fans as well as anyone who wants a good guide to great kitchen gear. With more than 125,000 hardcover copies in print, this indispensable—and highly entertaining—book is now offered in a paperback edition that every home cook can afford.

Death to Unitaskers!
by Traci, GA
June 25, 2008

Excellent guide to navigating the bevy of unitaskers and legitimate kitchen gear currently on the market. As usual, AB doesn't just give you a list of products and say "buy these". He gives detailed, plain-English explanations geared to both expert and novice cooks on not only the "what" but the "how" and "why" of each product. Especially appreciated by this reader is the list of manufacturers, websites, phone numbers and addresses of the products mentioned in the book.

My husband is a HUGE Alton fan. So he of course, tries to have all his kitchen gadgets. This book is so much easier than trying to watch episodes just to see what he used to make something. Thank you so much!

Alton Brown is a GENIUS!

The book is awesome, very informative, and well written. If you are a Good Eats fan, while reading this book, you will actually be able to here Alton Brown in your head and the way he writes it, you actually start to picture his mannerisms just like he does in his show when trying to make a point or explain something. I would definitely give this book 5+ stars for overall composition and useful information. A must buy for anyone who doesn't really know what they need in the kitchen and for those that have too much in the kitchen.

Great Information
by William, TX
August 26, 2008

As in his show "Good Eats", Alton provides the reader with information on the "gear" that one "needs" in the kitchen to get the cooking done. I was on the road to kitchen inefficiency, but with this book as my guide, I'm on my way to actually enjoying working in an efficient and fun kitchen.

I didn't know I was missing anything!
by Lola, TX

This book was a real education. I am a kitchen gadget collector (including small appliances) and didn't realize that there were so many gaps in my cupboard. I can't wait to get the items I am missing so I will no longer have to "make do" with something that kind of works.

Pots and pans
by Karen, NY
February 17, 2010

I got this book in order to learn what pots and pans are the best to have in a kitchen but I also wanted to know what pan/pot is used to cook what food. Example, I learned that 3 frying pans are essential for each kitchen - cast iron, stainless steel and non-stick. What foods are cooked in which ones? Ideally, this is what I needed to be told and what I thought would be the book, too. So, I guess I need another book.

I went to Bed Bath Beyond to help my boyfriend stock his new apt. We were overwhelmed by the amt of options for kitchens "tools". The books explains whats a good idea and what is a waste of money, etc. He loves the book.

bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and even in the first week we had both used it frequently! It was so useful we almost brought it to the store to buy kitchen accessories. There are also a few recipes intermingled which is nice as well. (the baked meatballs are fantastic)

The Kitchen Gageteer's Primer
by Kirk, WA
June 20, 2009

Oh Alton Where have you been all my life!! I loved this comprehensive look at kitchen gadgets, tools and creativity. The must haves and don't bothers would have been even more awesome if I hadn't already mis-invested so much. I really am impressed at how well his fun and funny TV personality translated into print. This book is a MUST HAVE item for any aspiring foodie or some one who just wants an efficient and comprehensive kitchen.

Great advice. There were a few things which he has expanded on or changed in his show, but for those who don't watch (I excuse my children because none of them has a television), it's a priceless guide.

Cooking Tip From the Food Network Kitchens

Liquids in a covered pot will come to a boil much faster than liquids in uncovered pans, due to the trapped heat.
