When Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes,” Chef Duff Goldman, created Charm City Cakes in Baltimore in 2000, he just wanted to make a few cakes for friends and family. As word got out about his uncommon creations, however, he quickly outgrew his home kitchen and two bakeries. Today, Charm City Cakes has grown to a staff of eleven: a ragtag group of musicians, artists, and creative souls with experience in architectural modeling, graphic design, sculpture, painting, DJ-ing, coffee slingin’, performance art, massage therapy, and waitressing.

The Ace of Cakes is an artful celebration that reflects the spirit of the bakery that started it all: a fun, visual, colorful scrapbook infused with Charm City Cakes’ hip record-store-meets-surf-shop-meets-bakery vibe. Each chapter--a visual feast, filled with graffiti-inspired art--will range in topics from a biography of Duff to a breakdown of the business: a typical work week, how the shop runs, tools of the trade, and much more.

The book features an all-star lineup of Charm City’s cakes, from the simple to the complex--those with armatures, supports, structural elements--and describes some of the bakery’s traditional and more unusual techniques, from carving and fondanting, welding, cutting, sawing, and gluing to airbrushing, piping, and sculpting! The Ace of Cakes also offers a behind-the-scenes look at Food Network, with sidebars about pitching, scripting, and editing the show; the motley bakery staff decorators; the most incredible customer stories and requests; and some of Duff’s favorite cake facts, tips, and techniques. And if that’s not enough to get you inspired, take it from Duff: “There are no limits to what we can do here at Charm City Cakes. You dream it, we’ll bake it, you eat it.”

I wasn't disappointed!

I bought this book to give as a Christmas gift and read every page and looked at every wonderful picture before I wrapped it. I expected (and got) a beautiful book with lots of pictures of Charm City Cake's awesome cakes but there was so much more than that. All the little mini "biographies" were great and I like that the crew, producers and the rest of the "behind the scenes" gang was included. I am a huge fan of the show and learned some things I did not know. I liked the "fun fact" section of each bio as well as the "favorites." The blueprint of the bakery on the inside front and back covers was cool too. Great book and I know my sister-in-law will be excited Christmas morning!

I think I was expecting pictures of the cakes (bigger pictures that is). Since I love the show and the staff, am looking forward to learning more about each of them.

Love it! I thought the book would have a few pictures, maybe the story of the bakery. Instead it's like a scrapbook or yearbook with personal stories and tons of pictures. So much fun to look at and read.

Background on every person
by Barbara, MN

It was really nice to have a background and experience for everyone in the bakery. They are the ones on a daily basis who help make the bakery what it is. I liked the little thumbnail pictures of the cakes made by the bakery.

Caution
by Kathleen, MD

This is a beautiful book! The author has done a great job telling the story of their work. The caution: This is not a cook book. This does not include the recipes or how-to's for those who might be interested in duplicating Duff's work. Combining the story with a more thorough inclusion of recipes would have been a great addition. But thanks for the beautiful book! Kathy

ACE of Cakes writes and ACE of books
by Robert, AZ
January 28, 2010

For anyone who is a fan of Ace of Cakes this book is written for you. It is not a cookbook or how to, but just a biography of the Food Network show and of Charm City Cakes. The chapters on each of the people who you have gotten to know in the show tell, in their own words, a little about themselves and what Charm City Cakes (and the show) mean to them. It is a fascinating peek behind the scenes of the amazing show.

The book is beautiful and full of stories that I have always wondered about. Like how they all got together, what their backgrounds were etc. I love watching the show. Everyone is so talented, the cakes are un- believable!

More Photos of Ace of Cakes Products

It would be really fun to see photos of the Ace of Cakes products that he has done. I realize it is probably a copyright issue - but I think his cakes are wonderful and unique. I am just starting to get into cake decorating - and it is becoming almost an addiction. I think the fondant is the hardest thing to work with almost. I have not tried to carve a cake yet - that is yet to come. If there are any books with that kind of information - I would be interested. Thank You

Ace of Cakes is Aces!

It was a great bio and history and filled me in on the parts the show didn't hit. The pictures show the amount of progress in design work and innovativeness in presentation and just the art of the edible. Still impressed and I feel like I've been shown the magician's secrets.

Ace of Cakes Book

November 10, 2009

I absolutely love this show! I can't get over how well everyone works together. There's some goofing around but when crunch time comes everyone works together to get the job(s) done. Awesome, Stunning results from all that hard work!! I ordered the book as soon as I heard about it while watching the show one night. Very quick service form Food Network as usual. Thank You! It's very interesting to read; to find out more about the people that work at Charm City Cakes. If we don't ever get the opportunity to meet them in person, this is the next best thing. The only problem I have is that I'd like to sit down and read it through and do nothing else. Alas, such is the life of a full-time homemaker! The troops have to be fed and house cleaned once in awhile. To all the wonderful people at Charm City Cakes and anyone else who had a hand in writing this book.....A Very Awesome Job! Sincerely, D.
